• National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the federal agency responsible for conducting research and providing recommendations to prevent industry-related illness and injury. They are responsible for generating new knowledge for occupational safety and health, and to apply that knowledge to ensure a safe and healthy environment for workers.

The need for occupational safety and health

Every industry has hazards that can both affect employers and employees. According to information gathered regarding workplace health and safety,

    • In 2007, there were 5,488 U.S. workers who died from occupational injuries
    • Another 49,000 deaths per year are caused by work-related diseases
    • In 2007, around 4 million private-sector workers experienced nonfatal occupational illness or injury; half of which took time off, restricted, and transferred from work
    • In 2004, there were 3.4 million workers treated in emergency departments due to occupational injury and among that, 80,000 were hospitalized
    • In 2006, employers spent around $87.6 billion on workers’ compensation. This number is only a portion of what employers pay for after cost shifting and insurance claims.

    Applying research into practice

NIOSH works closely with partners to translate research findings, new technology, and information to effective preventive products and programs in the workplace. Some of the programs include:

    • Prevention through Design – NIOSH is working on eliminating accidents and fatalities by studying workplace design flaws and improving them. They present design flaws to employers, architects, and engineers and suggest safer and more effective practices.
    • Total Worker Health – previously known as the WorkLife Initiative, it is a comprehensive organizational strategy to promote a healthy lifestyle. This approach focuses on workers’ overall-wellbeing and integrates with occupational safety and health.
    • Health Hazard Evaluation Program – this is the main program of NIOSH. It provides workplace assessments like exposure to hazardous materials, harmful conditions, and how those can affect workers’ health.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health provides nationwide services to industries in order to have a safe and healthy workplace environment for everyone. In the end, investing in safety and promoting health pays more, saves more lives, and saves a business more money than neglecting safe and healthy workplace standards.
