• 2011-2012 U.S. Pet Ownership Statistics

    American Pet Products Association (APPA) is a not-for-profit association made to promote, develop and advance pet ownership and the pet products industry and to provide the services necessary to help its members prosper. APPA conducts industry-related market research and surveys to help members learn about important pet industry information. In 1988, the first year the survey was conducted, 56% of U.S. households owned a pet as compared to 62% in 2008.

    According to the 2011-2012 American Pet Products Association (APPA) National Pet Owners Survey, 62% of U.S. households own a pet, which compares to 72.9 million homes.

    According to the APPA statistics on spending, every year, Americans spend more and more on their pets. Total pet industry expenditures in the US over the last ten years are as follows:
