• 6 Roles that Supervisor Play in a Drug-free Workplace Program

    The success of a drug-free workplace program also depends on the supervisor’s efforts in reinforcing the policy. Listed below are the 6 important roles that supervisors play to maintain a drug-free workplace environment.

    1. Maintain a safe, healthy, and productive environment for all employees – Supervisors serve as the key player to discuss workplace problems with employees, evaluate their performance, and help provide solution for those who seek help and advice. They maintain a balance of being supportive and firm to treat all employees fairly and help them become productive. If an employee commits violation, supervisors are expected to meet the person for discussion. Supervisors must try hard to talk professionally to avoid humiliating and degrading the employee.
    2. Have a clear and complete understanding of the drug-free workplace program – Supervisors serve as one of the vehicles to deliver drug awareness and prevention messages to their employees. They need to be knowledgeable about the program in order to convey the right message and be able to implement the policy fairly to all employees.
    3. Provide positive feedback – Supervisors play the role of a motivator. To avoid intimidating employees about the organization’s drug-free policy, supervisors should make it a point to acknowledge employees’ good output and excellent workplace conduct. Supervisors should highlight positive behaviors and give informal positive feedback, clarify expectations, correct wrong perceptions, and communicate standards, which can effectively increase employees’ commitment to the company and the drug-free workplace program.
    4. Understand and talk about the ways that the workplace can support the policy – Supervisors play as ambassadors of the drug-free workplace program. They should discuss the drug-free workplace program to employees in easy to understand ways as to how the program can help them and how employees can help maintain a drug-free workplace. Supervisors also make sure that the external and internal support mechanisms, such as the human resource (HR), departments and unions, security, in-house employee assistance programs (EAPS), and the internal health and wellness program  are functioning effectively to help employees comply with the policy.
    5. Maintain a good flow of communication in a manner appropriate for the workplace – Supervisors should make an effort to welcome employee comments, complaints, and suggestion.  They should encourage their teams to express ideas and opinions about the policy, while at the same time reinforcing the organization’s goal of achieving violent-free and drug-free work environment.
    6. Support employees – Supervisors serve as advocates of employees. They should view employees with drug-related problems as individuals who suffer from a treatable disease and not as offenders, and encourage them to get help before the addiction completely impairs them and causes severe damages.
