Hydrocodone Addiction – The Abuse of a Prescription Drug

Drugs become addicting once they are abused. Illegal drugs are not the only drugs that are addicting; there are a lot of prescription drugs that cause addiction once they are taken in doses more than prescribed. Sometimes, a person even undergoes a prescription drug testing for medical and employment purposes. Like anything that is abused, it causes serious threat to one’s physical and mental health.

Hydrocodone is a prescription drug used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is an opiate that has a morphine-like effect. People who take the drug without suffering from any pain have a high chance of getting addicted to the drug. Like other opiates, its euphoric effect triggers one to crave for more, and it only takes as short as 4 days of repeated use for one to get addicted to it.

Those who have Hydrocodone addiction might experience the following side effects while on the substance:

  • Anxiety
  • Decreased mental and physical performance
  • Emotional dependence
  • Constipation
  • Restlessness
  • Mood changes
  • Experiences difficulty in urinating and breathing
  • And an exaggerated sense of well-being
  • Sedation

Hydrocodone causes serious health problems if the addiction is left untreated. With a simple prescription drug test, addiction can be prevented or treated. According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, Hydrocodone addiction has long-term effects that cause liver damage, loss of hearing, increased in tolerance, and addiction. Treating the addiction is not easy. It will take months, sometimes years to recover from the addiction.

If you suspect anyone who is addicted to prescription drugs and shows some of the side effects mentioned, you can do a prescription drug screening to verify your suspicion. Detecting the use of Hydrocodone from anyone who is not suffering from any pain will save them the trouble of going through intense withdrawal afterwards. Prevention and treatment will also give them a chance to lead a healthy and productive life.
